During my experience using Google maps I found it to be extremely useful in a variety of different ways. I thought that being able to document the places that I have been or want to go with text, picture, video, or with a link to a website was very useful. Once I have found my point of interest and want to move on I am able to show my exact route with a drawing tool so that those who are following my map are aware of the path I plan to take. This can be extremely important if more than one person plans on using the map. I thought that Google Maps was a bit more difficult to get started on than Dipity, but I found it to be more useful overall. I like the way that the Maps application can help you to find destinations, as well as giving you muni times and routes. Google maps can bring up any business or service that you are looking for and then gives you many options to classify and view that place. The shape tool was useful for making a boundary for the map and keeping destinations within a certain area. This again helps when more than one person is using the map. I think that maps could be made for any and all types of use. Educational maps could consist of destinations throughout the city that pertain to the subject being studied. Maps of the hospitals could be made for ambulance companies. Maps of venues could be made for people trying to see shows. The possibilities are endless as far as maps are concerned and I think that shows a high demand for this product.

Dipity

From my experience with Dipity I thought that it was very user friendly and that the set up was very easy to understand. I like the click and drag aspect of the calendar and thought that it was easy to find exactly which date and event you are looking to update or check out. I also thought that "Add event" function was very user friendly and it's functions were well thought out. I had no problems adding pictures or specifying the location of an event. I also thought that the comment and follow functions were a good idea for a social media type perspective. It makes your time line able to correspond with those that follow you and allows you to plan future events together. Overall, I thought that Dipity was a great application for displaying events in a time line. I could see this site used for many things, but the one thing that stuck in my head the most was work scheduling. It seems like a company could post there workers shifts, as well as tasks and objectives on Dipity and it would be constantly updated as to the progress of each individuals work. This would be great for large projects with many teams working together in order to meet a common goal and time of completion.

Week 11 Social Networking
Part 1
I have a fairly limited history with social networking and all of the different services that are provided in today’s world. I started using social media a few years ago when Myspace first became popular and deemed it something that was not for me. I like to keep in contact with my friends but don’t feel that I need to be involved in every tiny detail of their lives. I eventually deleted my account with Myspace and do not miss it at all. I do use email quite frequently and find it to be a great tool for networking and communicating efficiently.

The social networking service that I decided to join was Facebook.

“Design Analysis of Facebook”
The service I chose to join was Facebook and the community that it serves is anyone who is looking to connect and share with the people in their life. I found that getting set up on Facebook was quite easy and pretty typical. The service is a lot like a more personal email account that caters to your personal tastes and needs. By registering through an existing group such as a school you attended or a business where you worked; Facebook makes it easy for you to find people that you know. Once you have found a few friends, Facebook then begins recommending friends for you based on connections it makes through the friends you already have. Facebook also is very personal in many other aspects of its design and set up. When I edit my profile to list my favorite music, Facebook updated me as to when and where I could go see the artists that I posted. When I edited my favorite sports and hobbies, Facebook again had all kinds of recommendations as to groups I should join or offers I should be aware of. I think social goals that are associated with Facebook have to do with popularity and instant gratification. I think it is a big deal for some people to post a comment or picture and then have a group of twenty or more people reply to what you said. I think that social status is measured by how many friends you have and also by how many times you can pop up on your friend’s page. The more pictures and posts you can generate, the more you pop up and the bigger the splash you make in the social networking pool.

I think that the future of social networking has endless possibilities. I think that people are so connected and in tune with what everyone else in their network is doing that this takes communication to the next level. I think that social networking is here to stay and will be constantly integrated into our everyday lives until we are robots. Right now Facebook can recommend friends who have similar interests in anything from sports and music to politics and religion. I think the next step is for Facebook to not only recommend those friends but then to book a tee time for you at the local golf course with them. Then it will book your dinner reservation, being sure to choose a restaurant that your friends would approve of, considering an update will be posted upon your arrival. Then, facebook will choose your wine for you at dinner and post that on your page as well so that everyone will be able to comment on your selection. It seems a bit ridiculous to me but it’s as if we are running around with a chip in our brain letting everyone know exactly when and what we are doing. I think that society has become attached to this feeling of instant gratification and that the future of this social networking frenzy will only be known in time.

Week 2 Excercise
Digital media / communication methods that I use on a daily basis are cell phones, CDs, Digital Video, Digital TV, e-books, the internet, Minidiscs, Video Games, E-commerce, game systems,as well as other interactive media. Digital Art is a very big part of my presence in the digital world, it is something that is a passion and hopefully a possible career.
This new age of information is leaving the analog world in the dust. Like Negroponte talked about the situation where he was supposed to view a presentation, but the materials were "caught up in customs'' becasue they were sent fed ex as atoms instead of digitally over the internet as bits. This is the difference between my elders being analog and my being digital. I never go to the bank and wait in line to take care of my finances. I get online and have everything I need at my fingertips, even if I need to talk to a teller I can chat with one at the click of a button. I can do this while I download a song, play a video game, talk on the phone, and blog for my class. All the while my elder is still waiting in line at the bank to get the cash to be able to buy the record at the store. When I go on a trip I am spontaneous and hop in the car and am gone before I have made up my mind as to where I am going. Once I decide I can type it in to a GPS and it will take me to my destination without a hitch. My elders have to plan their trips weeks in advance, study a map for the best route and pay close attention to each off ramp and upcoming road. If my car gets a flat tire, it will send a tow truck to help me with the push of a button. The way of the world has changed and the speed in which life can be lived is incredible. I do believe that multi tasking on a ten different things versus focusing on one specific thing is not how the digital age came to be. This change of pace from analog to digital has had a great impact on our world and time will reveal what the true implications of that change are.
